Leaders in Jewish
Spiritual Care

About NAJC

NAJC is the professional home for Jewish chaplains worldwide, and NAJC chaplains are trusted resources within Jewish communities and across healthcare, military, eldercare, corrections, and communal institutions.

We support chaplains at every stage of their journey, providing resources, connection, and affirmation—all grounded in our commitment to Jewish values and exceptional spiritual care.

NAJC exists to strengthen and support Jewish chaplains worldwide. We provide certification, education, mentorship, and advocacy—creating a sacred community where chaplains can develop their skills, deepen their service, and uphold the highest ethical standards.

Our Story

Our Story

NAJC was founded as the National Association of Jewish Chaplains, establishing itself as the address for Jewish chaplaincy expertise.

Our Story

Our Story

In 2014, we chose a new name to reflect our international membership and our commitment to caring for the human spirit. NAJC became Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains.

Our Story

Our Story

In Hebrew, Neshama (נְשָׁמָה) means “soul” or “breath;” it represents the divine spark God breathed into each of us at creation. We chose the name because, as chaplains, we are called to meet people in their most vulnerable moments with presence, compassion, and an unwavering recognition of their God-given worth and dignity.

Our Story

Our Story

Neshama is a reflection of that sacred breath we all share.

Our Story

Our Story

As the only organizations dedicated to Jewish chaplaincy, we ensure chaplains have the education, support, and the trust they need to serve with compassion and expertise, so that our sparks can shine brighter and our connection with God can continue to grow.

Our Team

The People Behind Our Mission

NAJC is guided by a volunteer board of dedicated professionals. In addition to their work as chaplains and spiritual care providers, they generously give their time to help shape NAJC’s mission, vision, and future.
